Roads Repairs
If you drive on the country roads of the ward then you will see that many of the roads are heavily potholed and deteriorating. In mid-April 2008 Renfrewshire Council will be making a significant additional investment in pothole repairs on the rural roads. You should see improvements - please tell me if you don't.
Annual Housing Area Inspection In September 2007 I joined group of tenants’ representatives, Council staff and another Councillor for a walkabout to inspect areas of Bridge of Weir and Bishopton where tenants might reasonably expect repairs and improvements to their outdoor environment. A total of 36 sites for action were recorded and I’m pleased to say that Council staff have responded well since then. 24 sites have been repaired or painted or improved; 9 sites have work in progress or specifications for work under preparation; the remaining 3 sites are being considered for future works in 2008/09. This shows that Council staff will respond to requests for assistance and service if they know where you have concerns.
Grounds Maintenance Now that Spring is here I have again been directing my efforts to improving the grounds maintenance regime in the Ward. Although much of the Ward is well maintained there are areas that we all know could be tidier and revitalised. The Council has restructured its operations in this service and has linked street cleaning and grounds maintenance so that they now compliment each other. I expect to see tidier flower and shrub beds, less grass cuttings lying around, better weed control on our footpaths and much-improved “gateways” as we drive in and out of our villages. If you see areas that you think could be improved then please advise your Councillors so that we can highlight it to Council management. Performance in these streetscene issues is being monitored and will be analysed and reported on during the Summer months.
Water and Sewage Bishopton’s sewerage infrastructure causes overflow problems to the eastern end of Old Greenock Road. Scottish Water advise that a new pumping station is being installed (Spring 2008) to service this area and the long-standing overflow issues should be resolved. Langbank has similar sewer overflow problems during inclement weather. There is no agreed solution to this yet but Langbank Community Council and Councillors are in communication with Scottish Water. Discussions are on-going.
Recycling Collections missing for Langbank Langbank residents are well aware that they have no kerbside recycling collection. Renfrewshire Council is reviewing recycling collection services to the village. Your 3 councillors are keeping up the pressure to secure this long-overdue service for Langbank.
A8 Roundabout, Langbank Glasgow-bound traffic is crossing the A8 roundabout at Langbank at speeds that cause concern to local Langbank drivers. There are regular "near-misses", with Langbank drivers heading for Glasgow having to stop on the roundabout to avoid collisions. Please approach this roundabout with great care and be aware of slow-moving traffic joining the A8 from Langbank.
Traffic Speeds Strathclyde Police have monitored areas in Bishopton and have measured speeds exceeding 50mph. This is clearly unacceptable. The Community Council and I are working with the Police to determine how best to prevent this irresponsible driving.
Footpaths Loitering at the Co-op lane on Greenock road has been a source of constant complaint for many years. The current procedure is that the gate will be opened between approx. 8 am and 4 pm. If this proves effective in reducing complaints then it is likley this arrangement will become permanent. Early signs suggest this is working.
Flooding Several residents are concerned that Kingston Road, Churchill Drive and Castle Crescent suffer occasional flooding. Renfrewshire Council has effected temporary solutions to alleviate the localised flooding and is seeking to secure partnership agreements with e.g. Scottish Water with the aim of identifying a longer term solution.
Anti-Social behaviour, loitering, drinking and intimidation. Please report incidents directly to Strathclyde Police on 0141 812 4113.
